Self Assessment

Over the course of the semester, I have achieved most if not all of the learning objectives in one way or another. I have achieved learning objective 1 especially during the literature review and rhetorical analysis when I had to analyze my peer’s works and their linguistic differences. One person in particular that I had to acknowledge was Erick’s linguistic difference because it was the most notable. Not to poke fun at Erick however his writing his a bit different so I had to deal with it in order to maintain a clear image of what he was trying to achieve with his writing goals. Learning Objective 2 also was part of learning objective 1 since I had to learn how to revise certain parts of my work and other’s work as well in every assignment even the ones I did with multiple people as I sometimes had to rewrite some parts of a work for example the Literature Review in order to introduce a point stronger or better clarify the point of what I was trying to achieve with my writing.

This would also help me achieve learning objective 3 especially during the research project and presentation as I had to revise my work and parts of the dialogue where my peers couldn’t in order to explain what the topic was. Especially when it came to CRISPR since it was the major topic I disguised in both assignments. I also had to make sure and review what the story of Kurisupa was as I had to make the main character seem human to convey the ethics of CRISPR and spread awareness. For learning objective 4 I also had to work with my peers especially on the project and Literature Review to make sure we all had a consistent voice rather than making it sound like three different people wrote one single paper through a collaborative process. Even if some parts had to be written in a different way just to make it seem like one person wrote it.

Also with learning objective 5 I have achieved it with the rhetorical analysis, literature review, and the reserach project. For each of these I had to go beyond the media I was looking at and relate it to current situations or past situations. For the rhetorical analysis I went over how women are not only fit for household roles and actually played bigger roles in history to indicate they are capable people and their lives aren’t tied to a kitchen. For the literature review I had to dive into the issues revolving around my topic of CRISPR like ethics because regardless of the pros and cons ethics are the main blockade in terms of how it can be used. Lastly, for the project I had to go beyond and tell a story of how just because someone is gene edited doesn’t mean they are perfect, in fact they are still human and humans are not always perfect because that’s ok.

Perfection means there is no room to grow. This is where I also achieved learning goal 6 because I had to articulate my message to make it clear. Not only did I do this in every assignment but it really mattered for the project because I had to make it understandable for the audience and not use complicated terms. For learning goal 7 I specifically focused on this during my literature review which was deepening my use of the CCNY database and using things such as springer which is meant for science. I have learned how to effectively use sources and even find the fitting ones for my topic.

For learning objective 8 I learned to summarize them better by summarizing, paraphrasing and mainly citing especially in APA formatting. I also learned to use quotes more effectively especially with ellipses. I also learned to better integrate them into the points I wanna explain in my writing. Lastly, for learning objective 9, I have learned to explain myself more clearly but oppress myself to write more professionally such as avoiding using slang terms or words with apostrophes at the end. It has helped me sound more clear as a result.
